Should I Go to a Dentist or an Oral Surgeon? Many people fail to know the difference between an oral surgeon and a dentist. When having oral health problems, we always go to the dentist, and then the dentist refers us later to an oral surgeon if the treatment is beyond their area of expertise. Our dental team will let you know the difference between several dental professionals and will teach what a dentist or an oral surgeon does.

Dentist

The general dentist performs general oral procedures such as whitening procedures, fillings, scaling treatments, general consultation, root canal treatment, and things that do not involve surgery of the mouth. The dentist will guide you and refer you to an oral surgeon if you have complex oral health issues The dentist does diagnose pf gum diseases and even teeth problems. By having regular dental visits you will avoid future oral hazards for the dentist will detect any oral problem coming up. The dentist will refer you to a specialist who will deal with your problem.

Oral surgeon

An oral surgeon is specialized in doing all the surgery in your mouth. The oral surgeon performs complex dental procedures that involve surgery. An oral surgeon will do the dental implants procedure, Extraction of wisdom teeth, nasal cavities widening, and any other complex procedure. The oral surgeon will use anesthesia while doing the operations and can either use, oral sedation, IV sedation, or administering nitrous oxide gas. This helps you feel relaxed during the dental operation. Oral surgeons are broadly trained and have a great experience, they will do your extraction and even jaw bone grafting procedures with so much expertise. Talk to the dentist and if your condition is beyond their area of expertise they will refer you to an oral professional surgeon.
