How Periodontal Disease Affects Your Dental Implant Placement

How Periodontal Disease Affects Your Dental Implant PlacementPeriodontal disease is a severe form of gum disease, usually present in adults or the elderly, that can lead to tooth loss. Its symptoms include bad breath, as well as receding gums, red or swollen gums. Other critical symptoms include bleeding gums when brushing your teeth and tooth sensitivity.

As healthy gums are necessary to steadily hold teeth in place, periodontal disease can make it difficult for a patient to receive a dental implant. Here is how periodontal diseases affect implant placement.

Loss of Bone Mass

We place dental implants on the jawbone. They gradually fuse with the surrounding bone with the help of your gums. The bone mass of a patient should be adequate to allow the implant to fuse with it; however, in the later stages of periodontal disease, patients may suffer from jawbone resorption. This makes it hard for them to undergo dental implant procedures.

For such cases, there are procedures that can help you increase the density of your jawbone. Getting a bone graft, which is a small sample of bone, in a resorptive area can stimulate it to regenerate over time, providing enough volume for an implant and assisting in the fusing process.

Gum Recession

Your gums play a crucial role in protecting your teeth. They ensure that during the dental implant placement, the crown, bridge, and denture in place remain intact. However, periodontal disease can cause gum recession, preventing them from holding teeth in place. Therefore, they are less likely to support dental implants.

A gum recession can also cause the dental implant to become visible after your surgery. This may also lead to peri-implant disease. As such, it is crucial that you treat your gum disease before getting an implant. Contact Mountain State Oral and Facial Surgery to learn more about dental implants and how they could benefit you!
