Wisdom Tooth Removal Princeton WV

Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are the last set of molars that typically emerge in the late teens or early twenties. These teeth are located at the very back of the mouth, with two on the top and two on the bottom.

Historically, wisdom teeth were useful for our ancestors who had larger jaws and consumed a rough diet that required more chewing power.

However, as human diets and jaw sizes have evolved, wisdom teeth have become less necessary. Often, modern jaws are too small to accommodate these additional molars, which can lead to various dental issues, making wisdom tooth removal a common procedure.

If you have concerns about your wisdom teeth, let our skilled professionals guide you through the process. contact Mountain State Oral and Facial Surgery today!

Why Do You Need to Have Your Wisdom Teeth Removed?

Wisdom teeth often need to be removed because they can cause several dental problems. Due to limited space in the modern human jaw, these teeth can become impacted, meaning they are trapped beneath the gum line or only partially emerge. Impacted wisdom teeth can lead to pain, infection, and damage to adjacent teeth. Additionally, they can cause crowding, making it difficult to maintain proper oral hygiene, which increases the risk of cavities and gum disease. Removing wisdom teeth can prevent these issues and promote overall oral health.

The Wisdom Tooth Removal Procedure

The process begins with a consultation, including X-rays to assess the position and condition of the wisdom teeth. On the day of the procedure, a local anesthetic is administered to numb the area, and in some cases, sedation may be used to help the patient relax. Then, an incision is made in the gum tissue to expose the tooth and bone, which allows removal of any bone blocking access to the tooth root. Then the tooth is extracted.

The site is cleaned, and stitches may be applied to promote healing. The entire procedure usually takes about 45 minutes to an hour. Post-surgery, patients receive aftercare instructions to manage pain and swelling and ensure a smooth recovery.
